The Biology of Rats
The most common pest rats in the UK are the Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the Black Rat (Rattus rattus). Brown rats typically weigh between 200-500g and can grow up to 40cm in length, including the tail.
They’re nocturnal, highly adaptable, and have a strong social structure. With a lifespan of up to 18 months, rats reproduce rapidly, making early intervention essential. The Black Rat is now rarely found in the UK.
