    The Biology of Bed Bugs

    Understanding how bed bugs live can help explain why they’re so difficult to eliminate.

    They are small reddish-brown insects that feed on the blood of humans, most often while we are asleep. They are about the size of an apple seed and are very good at hiding in cracks and crevices through the day. They do not fly or jump, but they can crawl very quickly and are experts at hitching a ride on luggage, clothing or furniture. It can be highly likely that bedbugs have travelled a lot further than us! Bed bug eggs can hatch in as little as a week. 

    The young bugs (nymphs) need only one blood meal to move through each stage of development and can mature into breeding adults in a matter of weeks. Left untreated bed bug infestations can spread rapidly which is why early intervention is essential.

    • Use protective covers: cover mattresses and box springs to stop bed bugs from nestling into the crevasses in your bed
    • Wash bedding: always on a high heat setting and by washing bedding regularly you limit the chances of an infestation.  
    • Public Transport: when putting your bags/belongings down on public transport, don’t then place them on your bed
    • Early intervention: don’t delay if you discover you have bed bugs, or they will soon become a big problem if left untreated.
