    • There are over 12,000 species of ants.  These can be found anywhere in the world from your back garden to the rain forest.
    • Ants are incredibly strong. Although they are tiny, they can carry objects up to 50 times their own body weight.
    • Ants are highly organised.  They live in tight knit colonies with specific roles like workers, soldiers, and a queen whose job it is to lay thousands of eggs.
    • The Queen ant can live for years. Sometimes even decades whilst the worker ants typically only live for a few months.
    • Food sources. Once an ant has found a reliable food source, they don’t keep it to themselves they leave a scent trail to let all the other ants know where it is.  This is exactly why you do not wat them entering your home.

    The Biology of Ants

    Ants’ biology is surprisingly complex given how small they are. Each ant has a tough outer shell called an exoskeleton, which protects its body and helps prevent dehydration which is perfect for surviving both harsh weather conditions and also the warmth and coziness of your home. Their bodies are split into three parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen, with powerful mandibles also known as their jaw which is used for carrying food, digging tunnels, and even defending the colony when an attack occurs.

    What really sets ants apart is their highly organised social structure. Most of the ants you see are sterile female workers, tirelessly gathering food and caring for the queen’s offspring. The queen’s sole job is reproduction, and she can go on to live for many years, while males only exist to mate and often die shortly afterwards.  

    Colonies can contain up to thousands of ants who all function like a single unit. Their efficiency is incredible. It’s this cooperation that makes them such persistent pests in homes as they show up in very large numbers.

    • Keep surfaces clean. Wipe down worktops, sweep floors, and store food in sealed containers to avoid attracting ants.
    • Seal entry points. Check for and seal gaps around windows, doors, and pipework where ants might be sneaking in.
    • Remove outdoor food sources. Clear away pet food, fallen fruit, and sugary spills in the garden that can attract ants to your property.
    • Gardening.  Overhanging branches and garden plants touching your home can act as bridges for ants so its important to keep everything trimmed back.
    • Manage moisture. Fix leaky taps, pipes, or outdoor hoses, as ants are often drawn to damp areas inside and outside the home.
    • Act fast. If you spot any ants indoors don’t delay in calling pest control experts. Ant infestations are notoriously hard to eliminate without professional help and the problem can escalate very quickly.
