    Facts About Wasps

    • Wasps are highly territorial. They will aggressively defend their nests.
    • One nest houses thousands of wasps. This greatly increases the risk of stings, especially in busy areas.
    • Allergic reactions: wasp stings can cause severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) in some people. This can cause great anxiety for everyone involved.
    • Activity: wasps are most active between July and September. This coincides with the time when people are enjoying the outdoors and there is increased footfall in outdoor areas.
    • Nests: wasps build their nests in or close to buildings. The nests can damage structures over time and can be very dangerous to approach if you are not a professional.
    • Returning wasps: wasps are known to return to the same nesting spot every year if it isn’t properly treated and sealed to prevent recurring infestations.

    The Biology of Wasps

Wasps are incredibly efficient and adaptable insects and understanding their biology highlights why infestations need to be taken seriously.  Wasps are predators by nature. They feed on insects such as flies and caterpillars.  A colony is run by a single queen who emerges in spring to build a nest and lay eggs.  These eggs then hatch into female workers who extend the colony, forage for food and defend the nest. They take this job very seriously!  By late summer a single nest can contain thousands of aggressive wasps.

Wasps communicate danger through pheromones.  If just one wasp feels threatened it releases a chemical signal that alerts and mobilises other wasps in the colony to attack.  That’s why disturbing a wasp nest can be extremely dangerous without the correct protection or equipment.  Wasps build their nests using chewed wood pulp and saliva forming a durable paper like structure.  The nests grow rapidly and can be reused if they are not removed or treated properly.

Advice on Controlling and Preventing Wasps

    • Keep food and waste securely sealed – sugary drinks, open bins and food waste attract wasps, this is especially relevant outdoors in the summer.
    • Inspect your premises regularly for any signs of wasps.  Check roof spaces, wall cavities and sheds.
    • Ensure any entry points around your premises are secure. Wasps will build a nest in the smallest of gaps and cracks so its important to seal them as soon as possible.
    • Treat old or inactive nests properly.  Abandoned nests can attract new queens the following season if they haven’t been removed and the area hasn’t been treated with sufficient products.
    • Educate staff on what to look out for.  Awareness among all staff/residents/pupils is essential in early detection.  It’s important they don’t disturb them but report them immediately.
    • Schedule a pest control inspection with a professional if you find a wasps nest.  Professional grade equipment will be needed to eliminate the problem and ongoing aftercare may be necessary.
