The Real Problems Rats Cause in Your Business

Rats can cause significant problems to your premises, affecting not only the working environment but also your hard-earned reputation. Rats gnaw through walls, insulation, food and electrical wiring. This can lead to unforeseen costs, damaged stock, and also fire hazards due to electrical faults. It can also cause your daily operations to come to a standstill, resulting in lost time and extra costs. In sectors such as healthcare, hospitality and education, rats can pose a serious health hazard by contaminating surfaces with urine and droppings.

Beyond the physical damage it can be extremely detrimental to your business if it becomes known that you have a rat infestation. It not only causes a panic but also a lack of trust in businesses where health and safety are paramount. That’s where our rat control experts come in.

    Facts About Rats

    • Rapid reproduction: a single pair of rats can produce up to 2,000 offspring per year meaning a small issue can quickly become a huge problem.
    • Constant gnawing: rats have strong teeth that are constantly growing. To keep them trimmed they gnaw on pretty much anything they can get their teeth into!
    • Excellent climbers & swimmers: rats can enter buildings through tiny holes as small as 15mm, roofs, drains, windows and cracks in doors. This is why a thorough inspection and prevention plan is essential.
    • Health hazard: rats can carry and transmit over 35 diseases including salmonella and leptospirosis, making them a serious health risk.
    • Nocturnal: rats are nocturnal which means lots of night-time noises and activity. This is often why a lot of infestations can go unnoticed until the damage is done.

    The Biology of Rats

Most commonly found in the UK is the brown rat. They are highly intelligent creatures and adapt to survive in a number of environments from sewers to food warehouses and office buildings. An adult brown rat can grow up to 40cm in length including the tail and weighs around 500 grams. They are mainly nocturnal, and their incredible sense of smell and hearing makes them very hard to catch without professional help.

Rats have what is called a rapid breeding cycle. A female rat can begin breeding at 5 weeks old and can have 6-12 pups per litter, with up to 7 litters in a year.

Their biology and behaviour mean they are perfectly suited to surviving in human environments, which is why they often make themselves completely at home before we have even noticed they have moved in.

Advice on Controlling and Preventing Rats in Your Business

Early intervention is vital when it comes to controlling rats in your business premises, not only does this prevent them from causing too much damage, it also greatly limits disruption caused by an infestation.  Considering ongoing prevention methods is also a must.

    • Seal entry points: inspect your premises regularly and ensure any possible entry points are sealed.
    • Maintain cleanliness: keep all areas especially kitchen, waste storage and staff rooms clean and tidy. Good hygiene practice reduces the risk of rat activity.
    • Limit food access: store any food products off the ground and in pest-proof containers, especially in hospitality, food production and healthcare environments.
    • Check for signs of activity: train all staff to spot early signs of an infestation. Look out for droppings, gnaw marks, nesting materials, or unusual noises.
    • Schedule regular pest control visits : Invest in preventive measures to ensure you don’t get caught out by rats. A proactive approach to rat control such as monthly maintenance means you will always be one step ahead.
