    Facts About Bedbugs

    • Bedbugs are tiny. Adult bedbugs are only about the size of an apple seed 4-5mm and they are reddish brown in colour.
    • Shape.  Bedbugs have a flat oval shaped body that makes them easier to hide in cracks and crevices.
    • Nocturnal feeders. Bedbugs tend to be most active at night when they come out to feed on the blood of humans or animals; they are attracted to warmth and carbon dioxide.
    • Hard to spot. Bedbugs are experts at hiding. They live in cracks, crevices, mattresses, box springs, headboards and even behind wallpaper or in furniture joints. A key sign of an infestation is finding dark spots around their hiding spots (bedbug excrement).
    • They can live months without food. Bedbugs can go for several months without a bloodmeal making it possible for them to survive for long periods of time.
    • Bites. Bedbug bites can look like small red wells or hives and often appear in a line or a cluster.
    • Bedbugs are excellent hitchhikers! They spread quickly via luggage, clothing, furniture and public transport. Making infestations in places like hotels, offices and schools very common.

    The Biology of Bedbugs

    Bed bugs are small wingless insects that feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals with humans being their preferred meal. Adult bed bugs are typically 4 to 5 mm long. They are reddish brown in colour and have a flat oval shaped body. After feeding their body swells up and becomes more elongated and reddish in colour.

    Despite their name, bedbugs are not limited to beds and enjoy hiding in cracks, crevices, mattresses, electrical outlets, furniture, joints, and even carpet edges. They can squeeze into the tiniest of spaces, making detection and eradication challenging without professional intervention.

    The life cycle of a bedbug consists of five immature (nymph) stages and one adult stage. They begin as tiny eggs each about the size of a pinhead which hatch within 6 to 10 days. Nymphs must feed on blood to grow and progress onto the next stage of life. After each feeding, they shed their exoskeleton, this process is called moulting. They go through five moults before reaching adulthood. A bedbug can complete its development from egg to adult in as little as eight weeks. Adult female bedbugs can lay up to 5 eggs per day and up to 500 in a lifetime. They reproduce very quickly, especially in warm environments, leading to rapid infestations if not treated quickly. 

    Bedbugs are nocturnal and they are attracted to body heat and the carbon dioxide we exhale. They prefer warm and stable indoor conditions; however they can go for months without feeding which means they can pretty much survive anywhere.

    Advice on Controlling and Preventing Bedbugs

    • Minimise clutter. Keep spaces tidy to reduce hiding spots. Cluttered areas make ideal conditions for bedbugs to thrive unnoticed.
    • Be careful with second hand items. Avoid bringing in used furniture or mattresses without thoroughly inspecting them.
    • Regular inspections. Conduct routine checks of beds, furniture, skirting boards and soft furnishings especially in high-risk areas such as hotels, hospitals and nursing homes.
    • Vacuum and steam clean regularly. This can help to manage and control minor infestations by disrupting their habitat.
    • Encase mattress and box springs. Use bedbug proof covers to trap existing bugs and prevent new ones from settling into bedding material.
